Roblox is an incredibly robust platform for all kinds of games and social activities. This track takes kids’ love (and obsession) with Roblox and uses it to teach the fundamentals of game design, digital art, and programming. Over the course of three seasons, participants will create and publish different games in Roblox Studio, and along the way learn the video game design pipeline from blue printing, concept, modeling, design, themes, mechanics and programming.
Fall – Obby Scripting
- Roblox is a robust game maker software perfect for young game designers. Use Roblox Studio to create a unique obstacle course or “Obby” and learn the principle of game design. Form level themes, narratives, style and environmental storytelling. Write code for custom power ups. Discover the means to design a game for online multiplayer and publish your game and challenge your friends to beat it!
Winter – Arsenal Arena PVP
- Learn what makes games fun and how to translate that to programmed game mechanics using the LUA language and Roblox Studio. Script new mechanics and interactions to start developing more interactive tournament based combat games. Create portals, jump pads and power ups to place around your arena. Discover the difference a strong theme can make to game design with environmental storytelling and map design.
Spring – Tycoon Coding
- Create a Tycoon style game by learning to write custom LUA scripts, code advanced object interactions. In this case, make machines to manufacture chocolate and to raise funds to acquire upgrades to your chocolate factory. Make an exponential gameplay loop and code a funds tracking system as well as the machines that manufacture your chocolatey resources.
